Evelio Palá Bofill was a Catalan painter active during the first half of the 20th century, known for his compositions of social, genre, and religious character. His work stands out for its solid drawing, interest in the human figure, and a marked sensitivity toward scenes with spiritual and popular content. He was a student of the Barcelona-based School of the Llotja. He participated in Municipal and Spring Exhibitions in Barcelona and in the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1942 and 1944. He exhibited his works at the Busquets room in Barcelona in the 1940s.
“The Easter” is a prominent composition with religious and social themes in which the artist depicts a procession or ceremony linked to the Easter festival. In the foreground appears the figure of a man dressed in black, captured with a reflective and gathered expression, as he advances alongside a group of clergy dressed in rich ornamental cloaks in gold and ochre tones.
The scene unfolds in an open rural setting, where the softly undulating landscape serves as a backdrop to the ceremony. One of the religious figures holds an elevated Eucharistic monstrance, a central element of the composition that emphasizes the sacred character of the event. The work stands out for the monumentality of the figures, the volumetric treatment of the garments, and the chromatic harmony based on warm tones that contrast with the greens and earthy tones of the landscape.
The firm brushwork and the modeling of the faces reflect the influence of early 20th-century Catalan figurative realism, while the compositional construction conveys solemnity, spirituality, and a deep sense of community.
