Biography of Giuseppe Migneco

(Messina, February 9, 1908 – Milan, February 28, 1997). In 1937 he was among the founders of the movement "Corrente" which brought together artists from different cultural backgrounds, with the common aim of opening up to European modern culture, rejecting the cultural isolation imposed by the fascist regime. In "Corrente" artists with very different visions of art gradually joined, initially united to reject now outdated painting canons, who would later take different paths, such as Badodi, Birolli, Broggini, Cassinari, Cherchi, Gauli, Guttuso, Manzù, Morlotti, Paganin, Sassu, Valenti, and Vedova. After the war Migneco refined his taste for the "social realism" under the influence of Mexican mural painters. In 1958 he participated in the 29th Venice Biennale. His colors are always strong and vibrant, recalling his Sicily with violent and sharp traits; the hard and courageous faces render his canvases expressions of existential struggle, in the continuous and deep confrontation with humanity and with the events that beset it, in the awareness and hope for freedom and memory, beyond the absurd solitude of existence. Migneco died in Milan on February 28, 1997.
