THE WORK
A figurative composition of strong expressive character. At the center of the scene a stylised horseman rides a rearing white horse, in a play of angular forms and opposing planes that recalls the lesson of Italian Cubism and the great tradition of the equestrian theme in Twentieth-Century art (from Marino Marini onwards). The palette is based on an earthy range of browns, golden ochre, chalk white and deep black, with the full moon acting as a luminous backdrop in the right half of the composition. The painting surface is rich, worked with tactile interventions and subsequent glazes that give tactile depth to the surface. The horseman subject is one of the most recognizable and sought-after themes in Landi’s production.
THE ARTIST
Bruno Landi is a contemporary Italian painter, active since the 1970s. His stylistic signature features a synthetic figuration of post-Cubist matrix, with references to Italian painting of the second half of the Twentieth Century and in particular to Marino Marini’s Horsemen cycle. Recurring themes in his work include the stylized human figure, the equestrian world, musical compositions, and dance scenes, always treated with an earthy palette and a strong compositional structure. He regularly exhibits in Italian and European galleries.
