Description from the seller
Walker’s Ship Log “Cherub III” – Solid Brass – England c. 1945-55
For sale is an extraordinary historical navigation instrument: an authentic ship log (Ship-Log) from the prestigious British firm Thomas Walker & Son Ltd. It is the iconic Cherub Mark III model, manufactured in Birmingham in the mid-20th century.
This device was responsible for measuring the distance traveled and the vessel’s speed through a precision mechanical system.
REGISTRATOR DETAILS (Main Body):
Piece of solid brass with an exceptional natural patina that certifies its age. It has not been polished to preserve its collectible value.
Authenticity marks: Includes the anchor logo (Trade Mark T.W.) and the historic address of the manufacturer: 58, Oxford St. Birmingham.
Serial Number: AM 3310 (punch-engraved).
Dial: White ceramic face in perfect condition, protected by original crystal. Includes main 100-mile dial and two sub-dials for hundreds and units.
Technical inscriptions: Maintains all maintenance instructions engraved (“Use Walker's Solidified Oil”).
Condition: The outer mechanism rotates and the brass tilting support is operational. Mounted on a display wooden base.
ROTOR DETAILS (Propeller):
Includes a 4-blade brass rotor with a hydrodynamic design.
Transparency note: This rotor bears no visible manufacturer marks or serial numbers. Therefore, although it is the technical model compatible with the Mark III system, it cannot be determined whether it is from the same era or manufacturer as the registrator. Aesthetically, it shows a patina and wear very similar to the main body.
