Description from the seller

Important bronze and cloisonné enamel covered incense burner – MEIJI Period – 38 cm

Description of the item
Superb and imposing tripodal bronze patinated incense burner with cloisonné enamels, distinguished by the quality of its narrative decoration and its architectural structure.
The object comprises three parts: the circular base adorned with a frieze of Greek key motifs, the main body supported by feet with heads of mythological monsters, and its removable lid.

Artistic characteristics:
• The Summit: The lid is crowned by a substantial solid bronze handle representing a Foo Dog (imperial guardian lion) standing, with a proud and protective posture.
• The Handles: Two side handles in cast bronze take the form of stylized dragon heads, imparting a dynamic presence to the silhouette.
• The Decoration: The belly is richly decorated with animated scenes on two faces. They illustrate court life in a garden landscape with pines and terraces. One observes a protocol scene where a dignitary presents an official document (or a gift) to a high-ranking figure, surrounded by attendants.
• The Pedestal: Adorned with wave motifs (shuiwen) and feet with Taotie heads.
• Technique: Cloisonné work with vivid colors (turquoise blue, green, red, yellow and white) on a background of geometric bronze motifs.
• Marking: The presence of an apocryphal relief seal under the base.

Condition and Origin
• Origin: Japan
• Style: Qing style (Republic period or mid-20th century).
• Condition: Good overall condition. Beautiful bronze patina. There are slight traces of natural oxidation and use consistent with age, which preserve the piece’s authenticity. The enamels are well preserved.

• Height: 38 cm
• Width (including handles): 24 cm
• Depth: 18 cm
• Weight: 2.9 kg
