“The Sleeping Giant” is an aerial photograph created by Italian photographer Sara Zanini, known for her drone work and for her visual exploration of urban forms observed from above, where architecture and landscape fuse into almost symbolic compositions.

The image depicts the town of Centuripe, in Sicily, one of the most singular places in the Mediterranean. Perched on the crests of the inland Etna hills, the inhabited center runs along a series of ridges that project into space like arms and legs. Viewed from above, the town takes on a strikingly anthropomorphic shape, so much so that it is often described as “the town that looks like a man lying down.”

In this photograph the urban structure becomes almost a monumental figure carved into the landscape. The terracotta-roofed houses cluster along the mountain ridges, forming a compact urban organism, while the main roads draw bright lines that traverse the village like pulsating arteries. The evening lights between the houses amplify this impression, making the town emerge from the surrounding dark landscape.

The title “The Sleeping Giant” arises precisely from this visual suggestion: Centuripe appears as a sleeping giant among the Sicilian mountains, a silent presence shaped over centuries by the encounter between geography, history and architecture.

The aerial perspective allows the viewer to perceive a dimension normally elusive from ground level. The village reveals itself as an organic form immersed in nature, where the density of constructions interacts with the vastness of the surrounding rural landscape. The image thus sits between documentary photography and symbolic vision, transforming a real place into an almost mythological composition.
