Description from the seller
Title
Antoni Clavé - “Rouge et Noir” - Large Mixed Media Print - Artist’s Proof (E.A.) - 1970s–1980s
Description
This is a powerful and highly textured original mixed media print by the internationally acclaimed Spanish master Antoni Clavé (1913–2005).
Acquired approximately 35 years ago from a prominent gallery in central Paris, the artwork has remained in a private collection and has been carefully preserved out of its frame ever since.
The work is executed on substantial, high-quality Japan paper (Washi), whose organic texture enhances the visual depth of the composition. Clavé employs a sophisticated interplay of beige, ochre, mustard, and earthy tones beneath a bold and commanding black form. The print demonstrates the rich materiality and layered surface effects for which Clavé’s mature abstract works are celebrated. The technique appears to incorporate multiple printmaking processes, possibly including lithography, relief printing, and carborundum-based textural effects.
The artwork bears the artist’s original pencil signature “Clavé” in the lower right margin and is annotated “E.A.” (Épreuve d’Artiste / Artist’s Proof) in the lower left margin. Artist’s proofs were traditionally produced in very limited numbers outside the regular edition and are highly sought after by collectors.
On the reverse are pencil inscriptions including “302. 21. S.” and “ROUGE ET NOIR” (“Red and Black”), which may refer to the title or archival identification of the work.
Antoni Clavé was one of the leading figures associated with the École de Paris and post-war European abstraction. His works are represented in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Centre Pompidou.
This impressive large-format print represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a significant work by one of the most important Spanish artists of the twentieth century.
Sheet size: 75.0 × 56.0 cm
Image size: 70.0 × 50.0 cm
Condition
The artwork is in good vintage condition, consistent with its age.
There are minor signs of age and handling, including light foxing and faint mat burn visible along portions of the outer cream-colored margins.
The printed image itself remains remarkably strong, with deep blacks, vibrant contrast, and no significant defects observed.
The natural deckled edges of the Japan paper are well preserved.
The artwork will be carefully packed and shipped rolled in a heavy-duty protective tube for safe international transport.
We will use Japan Post or DHL for shipping.
