Penck's pictures are inspired by prehistoric art and are characterized by the use of pictorial-language elements such as stick figures, signs and symbols.

Penck is also regarded as the father of the 'Neue Wilde' (New Wild) movement, a movement of the early 1980s with an ironic and provocative aesthetic.
