A.R. Penck (1939-2017)
The German painter, sculptor, musician and writer A.R. Penck, birth name Ralf Winkler, was born in 1939 in Dresden and, in the divided Germany, initially worked in East Berlin. Penck's pictures are inspired by prehistoric art and are characterized by the use of pictorial-language elements such as stick figures, signs and symbols.
Penck is also regarded as the father of the 'Neue Wilde' (New Wild) movement, a movement of the early 1980s with an ironic and provocative aesthetic.
The multiple-time Documenta participant has received many art prizes and is represented in many important collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
