Description from the seller
This superb and spectacular work in a vertical format of 60x40 cm offers a contemporary and deeply psychological interpretation of the royal figure. Painted in oil on canvas on a rigid support, the artist takes advantage of the material’s stability to apply a vigorous and richly textured technical execution, elegantly signed in the lower right corner by Ángel Simarro.
The piece stands out for its bold and sophisticated chromatic proposal based on a palette nearly monochromatic in greens. The background, resolved with loose brushstrokes and subtle modulations in olive green and emerald, envelops the figure, creating an atmosphere of mystery and contemplation. Against this background emerges the profile of a monarch dressed in a sumptuous cloak with a high collar in a deep carriage green. The density of the paint in the garments contrasts masterfully with the impasto technique used to recreate the golden brocades of the lapel, the shoulder, and, most importantly, the intricate crown that encircles his head. These golden details act as tactile points of light that capture the viewer’s gaze.
Technically, the lighting treatment is tenebrism-inspired, with a lateral light aimed directly at the subject’s face. With eyes closed, the face slightly raised and a solemn, introspective expression, the author achieves a delicate balance between the carnality of the warm skin tones and the regal coldness of the surroundings.
A work of great visual magnetism and pictorial maturity, ideal for collections seeking pieces with a strong expressive charge, timeless elegance, and an impeccable mastery of light and impasto.
