Description from the seller
This is a typical work by the artist Corneille. In this kind of work he often shows people, animals and birds together in a colorful, fantastical world. Corneille used bright colors, simple shapes, and clear lines in his art, making the work feel playful and lively. The couple in the work can be seen as a symbol of connection and love, while the birds reinforce the sense of freedom and movement.
Corneille (1922-2010) was a painter and graphic artist who radicalized the conservative Dutch art world in the early 1950s. Together with five other influential artists, including Karel Appel and Constant, he co-founded the post-war European Expressionist movement CoBrA in 1948. Corneille attended drawing and etching courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam between 1940 and 1942, but is generally regarded as an autodidact painter. Initially strongly influenced by Picasso, Corneille produced abstract work. From the late 1960s Corneille's work took on a more figurative character. In this work birds, women, and flowers are often the subject.
Dimensions of the work: 90 x 63 cm
