Description from the seller
Freek van den Berg (1918–2000) was a Dutch painter, often described as the last Dutch fauvist. His work is characterized by strong color, expressive brushwork, and a preference for landscapes, figures, and cityscapes. Although largely self-taught, he was taught in his youth by, among others, Frits Giltay. He was heavily inspired by French fauves such as Kees van Dongen, Matisse, and Derain.
In addition to his painting, Van den Berg was also active as an art critic for Het Parool and Vrij Nederland. In 1985 he moved to the village of Veessen on the IJssel, where his work became lighter and calmer in tone, influenced by the river landscape. Freek van den Berg developed a recognizable style that balances fauvism, impressionism, and expressionism, leaving behind a colourful oeuvre that is still loved by collectors.
Dimensions: 38 x 56 cm
