Jan Mankes was born on 15 August 1889 in Meppel, as the son of Beint Mankes, a civil servant with the tax authorities, and Jentje Hartsuiker. In 1902 he went to the HBS in Meppel but left it when the family moved to Delft in 1904. During that period he worked as an apprentice with the glass painter J.L. Schouten and attended an evening course at the Academy for Visual Arts in The Hague.

Jan Mankes werd op 15 augustus 1889 geboren te Meppel als zoon van Beint Mankes, rijksambtenaar bij de belastingdienst, en Jentje Hartsuiker. Hij ging in 1902 naar de hbs in Meppel maar hield dat voor gezien toen het gezin in 1904 naar Delft verhuisde. In die periode werkte hij als leerling bij de glasschilder J.L. Schouten en volgde hij een avondopleiding aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag.
