Description from the seller

Author: DIAN PETROV, born 1984 in VELIKO TARNOVO
Title:"Ballerinas in Blue "This painting is my interpretation of Degas's ballerinas. I didn't want to simply recreate the original, but to break it through my own sense of color and mood.

When I started working on it, I was most impressed by the movement and grace of the ballerinas. That's why I decided to preserve their presence, but to build the whole atmosphere in my own way. I chose the blue color scheme because for me it brings a sense of calm, dreaminess, and depth. I wanted the viewer to feel not only the dance, but also the emotion behind it.

I worked freely, with visible strokes and layering of tones. I wasn't looking for photographic accuracy, but a painterly feel. It was important to me that the light, space, and figures merge into a common harmony. That's why blue is present everywhere – in the walls, in the floor, in the shadows, and even in the ballerinas themselves.

In this work, the ballerinas are a symbol of beauty, discipline, and the pursuit of perfection. They are not presented as stage stars, but as young girls in a moment of preparation and concentration. It is this human moment that inspired me the most.

The influence of Degas is the starting point, but the painting is built through my own vision. Through color and composition, I tried to create a new mood and a new reading of the familiar theme. For me, this is not a copy, but a conversation between classical art and my personal vision as an artist.

With this painting I want to show how a well-known work can be reinterpreted in a new way, without losing its beauty and spirit.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTIST

Dian graduated from the National High School of Applied Arts "Trevnenska Shkola", majoring in woodcarving, and then from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Veliko Tarnovo. He has long been fascinated by wood, its warmth and coziness. His skillful hands have sculpted the iconostases of more than three temples in different villages in the region. His work is the carved altar screens of the churches "St. John of Rila" in Petko Karavelovo, "Holy Ascension of Christ" in Radanovo and "Holy Nativity of the Virgin" in Polski Trambesh. Some of the holy images he created are now owned by private collectors in Greece and Italy. He learned the intricacies of icon painting from his grandfather Dimitar Kosev, who was a self-taught artist. It was from him that the Tarnovo native inherited his passion for art and his gift for painting.
“I love experimenting in art and allowing myself different freedoms both as a means of expression and as a technique. In my paintings, I use nets, leaves, soil, plastic. I have painted different images even on cardboard boxes. And my attempt to make a painting on marble turned out to be the most difficult,” the artist smiles.
Contemporary art with its unlimited creative freedom has attracted Dian Petrov for years. Initially, the young artist painted ordinary landscapes, then he was provoked by spontaneous realism, and now his paintings are the embodiment of abstractionism and postmodernism.
The art of the Tarnovo native is already well known to connoisseurs in our country and abroad. He has had solo exhibitions in Sofia, Plodoviv, Veliko Tarnovo, etc. He has also participated in many general exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. His paintings delight connoisseurs throughout Bulgaria, as well as private collectors abroad, who regularly buy his paintings! He also participated in exhibitions in Hungary in 2024, a solo exhibition at the Grand Hotel Sofia. In 2025, a general exhibition in London at Theholyartgallerie.Solo exhibition at Grand Hotel Sofia 2026.
