Tom Rowden (1842) watercolour Schotse hooglanders, 19th century, depicting cattle in a rugged British landscape, hand-signed, in a classical style, measuring 40 x 57 cm including the frame.
Description from the seller
This refined watercolor depicts a group of Scottish Highland cattle, with careful attention given to the characteristic coat texture, the imposing horns, and the rugged landscape in which the animals are situated. The artist demonstrates, with a subtle mastery of color and light, the atmosphere of the British Highlands in a convincingly captured manner. The detailed rendering of the animals testifies to a thorough knowledge of nature and keen powers of observation.
The work is by Thomas Rowden (1842), a British artist who was initially trained as a carpenter and joiner. After a period of service with the Royal Marines, he settled again in Exeter in 1880, where he fully devoted himself as a self-taught painter to his craft. His oeuvre consists mainly of landscapes with cattle, sheep, and wild ponies, set in the expansive nature of Dartmoor and the Scottish Highlands.
Dimensions: 20 x 37 cm
Dimensions with frame: 40 x 57 cm
