Canvas size: 52 x 60 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Netherlands
This oil painting was made by Arnold (Nol) Hendrik Koning (Winschoten, 2 April 1860 – Barneveld, 20 January 1945), a Dutch painter who worked in the Hague School style. In 1887 he stayed nine months in Paris, where he met Theo van Gogh, art dealer at Goupil & Cie, as well as his brother Vincent van Gogh. After Vincent moved to the south of France in the spring of 1888, Koning secured a place in Theo’s apartment on Rue Lepic. Letters from their friendship have been preserved.
Upon his return to the Netherlands, Koning settled again in The Hague and traveled across the country to paint. His work is now included in the collections of, among others, the Groninger Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Drents Museum.
The painting can be viewed at Art Dumay. It is possible to have it professionally cleaned by a restorer affiliated with Restauratoren Nederland, the professional association for restorers.
