20th century brass pelorus (taximeter) compass with a 24 cm diameter, 8 cm height and 24 cm depth, made in the Netherlands, in good used condition with small signs of aging and spots.
Description from the seller
Large Antique Brass Ship Pelorus / Taximeter with Dutch Winds – Ø 24 cm – First half of the 20th century.
Hereby offered is an impressive and authentic brass ship pelorus (in maritime terms also known as taximeter or peilschijf). This instrument was used on ships to manually take bearings by reference to distant objects or celestial bodies.
Dutch Edition: The copper disk is specifically engraved with the Dutch wind directions (ZO for Southeast and ZW for Southwest), making this a rare piece of maritime heritage from the Low Countries.
Size: With a generous diameter of no less than 24 cm, this has been a real, functional instrument used on the bridge or deck of a seafaring vessel, not a small decorative replica.
Sight: Equipped with a hinged and folding alidade (the sight) through which the navigator could look to the horizon to measure angles.
Condition: The instrument is in a beautiful used condition with an authentic, deep patina that testifies to its maritime past. There are no factory stamps or maker marks, indicating artisanal production or assembly as part of a larger bridge/navigation installation. The disk features several original mounting holes.
A beautiful, heavy, and unique historical object for the serious collector of maritime antiquities or as an exclusive maritime decorative piece.
