ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Michel Seuphor (1901 - 1999), born Fernand Berckelaers on 10 March 1901 in Antwerp, Belgium, was an influential artist, writer and critic. He is best known for his contribution to abstract art and his role in the art world of the 20th century.

Early Life and Education:
Seuphor grew up in an artistic milieu and developed an early interest in literature and art. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he further developed his artistic skills.

Career and Contributions:
In the 1920s Seuphor moved to Paris, where he immersed himself in the avant-garde art scene. He befriended many leading artists of the time, including Piet Mondrian, whose work had a major influence on Seuphor's own artistic development. Seuphor became a fervent advocate of abstract art and, together with Joaquín Torres-García, founded the group Cercle et Carré (Circle and Square) in 1929, which promoted geometric abstraction.

In addition to his work as an artist, Seuphor was a prolific writer and critic. He published numerous articles and books on abstract art, including Abstract Painting: 50 Years of Accomplishment and Piet Mondrian: Life and Work. His writings provided a significant contribution to the theoretical underpinning and broader acceptance of abstract art.

Works:
Seuphor's own artistic output consisted mainly of abstract drawings and paintings, often characterized by clean geometric forms and minimalist use of color. He also experimented with poetry and typography, allowing him to explore the interplay between text and image.

Later Years and Legacy:
In the years after World War II, Seuphor remained active in the art world, both as an artist and a critic. He spent a large part of his later life in France, where he continued to write and exhibit. Michel Seuphor died on 12 February 1999 in Paris.

Seuphor's legacy lives on in his contributions to abstract art and his efforts to promote and document this art form. His work and writings remain an important resource for art historians and lovers of abstract art.
