Gaston Bogaert, sometimes written Bogaerts or under the pseudonym Capouillard, was a Belgian artist born in 1918 in Le Mans and who passed away in 2008 in Etterbeek. He was a Belgian surrealist painter and graphic artist. Gaston Bogaert studied architecture and from 1938 dedicated himself to interiors, theater, and advertising graphics. He worked as an advertising illustrator for Sabena. He gained fame as a poster designer (1949–1958). Administrator of the Belgian Chamber of Graphic Artists (1964–1968). Teacher at the Higher School for Advertising Techniques in Brussels (1965–1969). He became a professional artist in 1965. His world is built from memories of childhood, travel memories, nocturnal impressions, all sublimated by their poetic processing. At Eurocon in 1978 he won in the category “Fantastic & Fantasy Award” as an artist. Bogaert strives to create an engaging and intriguing atmosphere by using unreal images, often employing melancholic tones. The mystical atmosphere radiates a kind of nostalgia and menace in the works. Human figures are rarely seen in the paintings. From the press: ‘The international renown of G.B. rests on his astonishing craftsmanship with which he endows his fantasies, anachronisms, planets, seas, fin-de-siècle constructions, the strange and disconcerting surrealistic atmosphere.’ Included in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures by Belgian Artists. (Wikipedia, Piron)
