Gaston Bogaert, sometimes also written as Bogaerts or under the pseudonym Capouillard, was a Belgian artist born in 1918 in Le Mans and who died in 2008 in Etterbeek. He was a Belgian surrealist painter and graphic artist. Gaston Bogaert studied architecture and from 1938 dedicated himself to interior design, theater, and advertising graphics. He worked as a advertising illustrator for Sabena. He gained fame as a poster designer (1949-1958). He was a administrator of the Belgian Chamber of Graphic Artists (1964-1968). He taught at the Higher School for Advertising Techniques in Brussels (1965-1969). He became a professional artist in 1965. His world is built from memories of childhood, travel memories, nocturnal impressions, and all of this is sublimated by its poetic processing. At Eurocon 1978 he won in the category “Fantastic & Fantasy Award” as an artist. Bogaert strives to create an engaging and intriguing atmosphere by using unreal images. He predominantly uses melancholic tones. Through the mystical atmosphere, the works convey a kind of nostalgia and a sense of menace. Human figures are rarely seen in the paintings. From the press: ’The international fame of G.B. rests on his astonishing craftsmanship, with which he lends his fantasies, anachronisms, planets, seas, fin-de-siècle constructions, and the strange and bewildering surrealist atmosphere.’ Mentioned in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists.
