Description from the seller
BODEGÓN DE MAGRITTE is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. This painting is not a simple homage, but an open conversation between Fauvist modernity and metaphysical tradition. The work articulates a dialogue between color, silence and symbol, placing the viewer in a territory where the classical and the modern coexist in poetic tension.
In the foreground, the sculptural head —an echo directly of Greco-Roman tradition— appears wounded: an intensely red, almost visceral stain bursts into the marble purity. This pictorial gesture breaks the classical serenity and turns the sculpture into a vulnerable body. The reference to De Chirico is perceived in the suspended atmosphere, in the space open to the sea horizon and in the isolated presence of objects charged with mystery.
Nevertheless, the spirit of Henri Matisse dominates the chromatic construction. The vibrant blue of the sky, the incisive green of the leaf, the saturated yellow of the floating face, and the contrast between planes of light and shadow reveal a Fauvist awareness of color as an emotional structure more than descriptive. Color does not accompany the form: it takes precedence.
The face suspended in the sky, crowned by an exuberant hat of fruit and organic shapes, introduces a dreamlike dimension that also recalls Magritte’s surrealism. The flotation of the pictorial element in the celestial space turns the still life into a mental scene. The sphere on the table —a recurring object in metaphysical tradition— balances the composition and reinforces the idea of perfection, cycle and eternity.
The dark curtain that divides the classical head into light and shadow emphasizes the work’s central duality: reason and emotion, past and modernity, permanence and wound. Nothing is casual; each element functions as a sign.
In Bodegón de Matisse, the artist builds a space where color acts as autonomous language and the classical form decomposes into a contemporary symbol. The work does not represent objects: it represents states of consciousness.
A piece of strong aesthetic presence and complex conceptual reading, that dialogues with the history of art from its own voice and decidedly current.
