Description from the seller
Michael Joseph
Casting Brunette – Jumping
Photo taken in the 1980s
Medium: Authentic original darkroom print, signed by the photographer
Presentation: Mounted with conservation mat
Edition: Unique darkroom print
This striking photograph captures a young brunette model suspended in mid-air, her hair flying upward and her body folded into a dynamic leap. Reduced to its essential elements of movement, light and form, the image possesses an almost dreamlike quality, transforming a simple casting session into something unexpectedly elegant and theatrical.
The photograph originated from one of Michael Joseph's model-casting sessions in London during the 1980s. Known throughout the advertising industry for his ability to organise complex group scenes and memorable commercial campaigns, Joseph was equally fascinated by the spontaneous moments that occurred between assignments. Here, a fleeting jump becomes a study of grace, energy and anticipation.
The composition is remarkably clean. The model appears to float against a softly textured background, isolated from any specific place or time. Her airborne pose creates a sense of freedom and weightlessness, while the rich monochrome tones lend the image the timeless quality associated with classic analogue photography.
The reverse bears a handwritten archive note reading "Casting Brunette – Jumping!!", offering a rare glimpse into Michael Joseph's working process and confirming the photograph's place within his personal archive. The original Michael Joseph studio label remains present on the reverse.
Printed traditionally in the photographer's London darkroom, this authentic darkroom print displays the tonal depth, subtle grain and tactile character that distinguish hand-made silver gelatin photographs from modern digital reproductions.
A rare and highly decorative image that combines fashion, movement and photographic craftsmanship in a single memorable composition.
