Biography of Hoang Anh.
Born in 1984 in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam, lives and works in Hanoi
Originally from Thanh Hoa province, located 150 km south of Hanoi, Hoang Anh belongs to that pivotal generation of Vietnamese artists (the 8x generation) who combine cultural heritage with contemporary abstraction. A graduate of Vietnam University of Fine Arts, he has established himself on Hanoi’s artistic scene with a bold approach to matter and color.
Graduated from the Artistic Talents program (class 13) at the Thanh Hoa School of Culture and Arts
Graduate of painting department (class 48) at Vietnam University of Fine Arts
Style and Artistic Approach
Hoang Anh’s work is distinguished by an intense exploration of texture and movement. While he explores varied themes such as landscapes, nature, and the female form, it is in abstraction that he reveals his full expressive power:
• The energy of gesture: A devotee of oil and acrylic painting, he frequently uses a palette knife to apply color in vigorous horizontal strokes, creating a musical rhythm on the canvas.
• Chromatic contrasts: His work plays on the opposition between often neutral backgrounds (urban greys, textured whites) and flashes of primary colors — ardent reds, solar yellows, and deep blues — that seem to surge from the surface.
• Lyric abstraction: His compositions do not aim to reproduce reality but to capture its emotional essence. His canvases often evoke ephemeral phenomena: the reflection of light on water, the vibration of heat, or the bustle of a metropolis in flux.
Exhibitions and Recognition
An active and acclaimed artist, Hoang Anh regularly exhibits in Hanoi’s prestigious galleries and within national art collectives. His works are part of numerous private collections, both in Vietnam and internationally, captivating with their ability to translate an Eastern sensibility into a universal and modern language.
"Painting is, for me, a breath, a way to fix the invisible energy that surrounds us." — Hoang Anh
