Description of the work
I have depicted a scene from American Psycho, a film that constitutes a critique of the superficiality of 1980s capitalism and the obsession with social status and appearance. Its protagonist, Patrick Bateman, is a serial killer whose extreme violence and pronounced machismo reflect the moral vacuum and dehumanization present in the society that the work portrays.
I have chosen the moment in which Bateman throws a chainsaw down the stairs because I believe it possesses great visual strength. The intense contrast between light and shadow, as well as its drama, evoke resources characteristic of Baroque painting.
The work is titled A Modern Caravaggio, in reference to Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), the Italian painter considered one of the leading exponents of the Baroque. The reference establishes a parallel between the violence of the cinematic character and the dramatic intensity characteristic of the artist's work, as well as the fact that Caravaggio was involved in a homicide.
The painting is executed in acrylic. My intention has been to translate the cinema image onto the canvas, preserving even the grain and texture typical of the screen. The composition adopts a middle shot, placing the protagonist in the center of the scene. The dark background creates a tense atmosphere and emphasizes the unsettling character of the expression and the shadows. In addition, the direct gaze of the character toward the viewer creates a sense of confrontation and discomfort that reinforces the emotional impact of the work.
