Born in 1925 in New York (The Bronx), Yitzroch Loiza Grossbergvit works in New York. He first studied music at Juilliard School in New York (1944-1945), where he befriended Miles Davis and became a jazz saxophonist under the pseudonym Larry Rivers. From 1947 to 1951, he pursued artistic training with Hans Hofmann and then took art history courses at New York University.
His first solo exhibition took place in 1949. In the early 1950s, he reintroduced figuration into American painting and then gave a very personal version of Pop Art, by diverting the codes of major paintings that have marked art history, such as Courbet’s The Burial at Ornans or Manet’s Olympia.
Larry Rivers died in August 2002 in Southampton, United States.
