The 19th‑century oil painting "Stadsgezicht" by Kaspar Karsen (1810–1896), from the Netherlands, is framed, measures 40 × 50 cm including the frame, and is hand-signed in good condition.
Description from the seller
Kaspar Karsen was a Dutch painter and draughtsman, known for his romantic cityscapes. Born and trained in Amsterdam, he developed a fondness for old urban architecture and often painted historical city views in a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Unlike his contemporary Cornelis Springer, with whom he also collaborated, Karsen chose a more narrative and atmospheric approach to reality.
Besides his own work he had also great influence as a teacher, among others on Springer and his son Maurits Karsen. His paintings, characterized by detailed architecture and feeling for light, can today be found in, among others, the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. Karsen died in 1896, but remains valued as a master of the 19th-century cityscape.
This painting shows an atmospheric cityscape by the water, in which Karsen demonstrates his characteristic romantic view of the past. On the left rises a dark city gate or fortress tower, partly shrouded in shadow and contrasting with the soft, warm light of the sky above. On the right are some impressive buildings, including a large church that glows in the sunlight and casts its reflection in the calm water.
On the quay and on the water there is liveliness: sailing boats and rowboats bring movement to the scene, while the figures on the shore and in the boats add a human touch. The sky is full of soft colors, from golden yellow to light blue, giving the impression of a late afternoon or early evening.
Dimensions with frame: 40 x 50 cm
Dimensions without frame: 31 x 41 cm
The work is on display in our gallery. Furthermore, Art Dumay operates a frame-making workshop (this year their 85th anniversary) and a restoration studio. So if you would like to use these services, we would of course be pleased to hear from you.
