Description from the seller

PURO CUBANO is a 70 x 100 cm painting by Flavia Delgado that pays homage to one of the most recognizable images of the Caribbean imagination: the combination of tobacco, rum, and tropical scenery. Inspired by the aesthetics of vintage advertising posters and the visual language of Pop Art, the work turns a sobremesa scene into a celebration of identity, tradition, and the pleasure of living without hurry.

The composition is organized as an elegant contemporary still life. In the foreground, a Cohiba cigar, a red ashtray, and an amber rum glass sit on a wooden table illuminated by the warm light of sunset. In the background, the sea horizon, monumental clouds, and a solitary palm tree place the scene in a landscape that immediately evokes the Caribbean. Over this setting, the title PURO CUBANO appears with the graphic impact of an old promotional poster.

The color palette blends deep blues, golden ochres, vibrant reds, and dark blacks. The strong contrasts and expressive outlines provide visual impact and recall both mid-20th-century commercial illustration and contemporary graphics. The result is an image that conveys character, warmth, and an atmosphere rich in nostalgia.

Beyond the objects depicted, the work speaks of a culture. Tobacco and rum appear as symbols of artisanal tradition, of measured conversation, and of gatherings that extend to the rhythm of the sea breeze. The scene evokes seaside terraces, afternoons slowly turning into night, and the sensory richness associated with the Caribbean world.

The open horizon and the presence of the water convey a sense of freedom and expansiveness, while the palm tree cut against the sky functions as a universal icon of the tropics. The image oscillates between personal memory and collective memory, inviting the viewer to reconstruct their own associations with travel, leisure, and shared moments.

With a vibrant, elegant, and evocative aesthetics, PURO CUBANO captures the spirit of a deeply rooted tradition in Caribbean culture, transforming a quotidian moment into a scene charged with identity, atmosphere, and character.

Seller's Story

I present a pictorial work line strongly linked to illustration and artistic poster design. My works combine the language of classic poster art with the plastic freedom of contemporary painting: flat colors, defined contours, direct scenes, and a clear narrative sense. My work dialogues with the tradition of 20th-century poster art, especially with the universe of Art Deco and European and North American advertising posters, where authors like A. M.. Cassandre, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Leonetto Cappiello used synthetic imagery and color for visual impact. There are also affinities with European comic graphics and the clear line, from Hergé to modern editorial illustration. In my paintings, I depict interiors, architectures, figures, and travel scenes—such as roads, vintage cars, or landscapes—approached from a graphic perspective reminiscent of posters and illustrated books, but transferred to the realm of painting on paper and canvas. I aim for each image to function like a frame or a narrative poster, capable of suggesting a broader story without needing to explain it.
