The artist Mark Tobey (1890–1976):
He was a pioneering U.S. painter, regarded as one of the most important pioneers of American Abstract Expressionism.
Here are the key facts about his life:
Origin: Born in Wisconsin, he lived and worked for a long time in Seattle. His final years were spent in Basel (Switzerland).
The "Seattle Master":
He was the head of the so-called Northwest School, a group of artists on the American West Coast.
Far Eastern influence:
Tobey converted to the Bahá’í Faith and studied traditional calligraphy and Zen meditation in China and Japan. This profoundly shaped his style.
The "White Writing":
He became famous for this technique – dense, net-like structures of fine, pale lines laid over darker color layers.
Influence on Pollock:
His net-like all-over compositions emerged before Jackson Pollock's famous "Drip Paintings," and he is regarded as a crucial pioneer of this art form.

International success:
In 1958 he became the second American ever to win the Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale.
