We are putting up for auction one of the most aristocratic, slender, and sophisticated silhouettes of 20th-century French high jewelry: Cartier Paris’s vertical-pocket cigarette lighter, handmade in France during the 1970s. This superb collectible piece stands out for its iconic minimalist aesthetic and unmistakable architectural design, characterized by a solid chassis with a sumptuous textured finish that exudes timeless elegance and the quiet luxury associated with the Place Vendôme house.
The lighter’s body features the legendary Godron motif (deeply engraved horizontal grooves), a classic Cartier jewelry pattern that runs around the entire piece. This finish not only provides a highly pleasant textured grip in the hand but also creates a beautiful optical play of metallic gleams and shadows depending on how the light hits it. With a refined size of 7.1 cm in height, 2.5 cm in width, and barely 1.2 cm in thickness, it is one of the most ergonomic and elegant lighters ever designed, diverging from the bulkier shapes of the competition of the era. At the base, the official brand marks, workshop seal, and its individual serial number 46170 F are clearly visible, engraved with Cartier’s classic punch.
Mechanically, the piece is a work of art of Swiss-French microengineering from the golden age. It incorporates the pop-open lid with a serrated ignition roller and the distinctive clean base, which impeccably conceals the regulating valve, gas-loading hatch, and flint compartment. The lighter is in excellent cosmetic and fully functional condition, delivering an instant spark and a sharp, stable, perfectly adjustable flame, as certified in the photos.
Conservation Status: Collection Quality / Excellent Vintage
The cosmetic and mechanical condition of this specimen is magnificent, indicating it has been a display piece cared for with meticulous attention:
Chassis and Godron Finish: It is in extraordinary condition. The horizontal grooves retain all their original relief and show no typical wear from friction or flattening. The edges and corners (critical points on these lighters) are clean and completely free of structural impacts.
Fitting and Hinge: The top lid opens and closes with a firm, clean, and aligned motion, maintaining perfect geometric tension in the hinge with no play.
Mechanical: The side roller turns with millimetric smoothness. The system’s seal has been tested, the valve is hermetic (no leaks), and the gas outlet is steady, guaranteeing an immediate ignition.
Curious Fact for the Collector
For Catawiki’s appraisers, Cartier lighters from the classic Godron line in silver finish and slim form have become highly coveted vintage assets due to their extreme scarcity in fully operational condition. Most of the 1970s lighters that reach the market suffer chronic gas losses or severe wear to the grooved relief. Finding a specimen with such clean numbering, maintaining the textured relief intact, and demonstrating a flame as powerful and vibrant as this is a true rarity that typically sparks the interest of high-end collectors on the international market. The fact that it is 100% operational and has such a sharp flame ensures intense competition and a truly wild bidding ratio on the international stage.
Wishing you the best of luck with your bids and a superb auction to all Catawiki participants!
