38 x 51 cm without frame
From a young age Jaap Nanninga (1904-1962) felt drawn to painting and drawing. He initially worked as an advertising designer, but only later in life did he begin his career as an artist. After travels through Germany and Poland, Nanninga settled in The Hague in 1938. He had studied in Groningen with Hendrik Werkman and Jan Wiegers, and after the war in Paris also with Geer van Velde, who encouraged him toward abstract painting; influenced by Cubism and the abstract art movements in France, he began painting abstractly from around 1949.
The people of the young CoBrA group invited him to join their movement, but he consciously kept his distance. Nanninga was a pronounced colorist who sought a highly individualistic and poetic visual language. Eastern mysticism and ‘primitive cultures’ inspired him. From 1955 he was affiliated with the ‘Liga Nieuw Beelden’. His abstract work possesses a solid formal language with a wonderfully subtle and soft appearance. In January 1962 Nanninga perished in an accident after a visit to café De Posthoorn in The Hague. His work is classified as part of the art movement the Nieuwe Haagse School.
Viewing is, of course, possible. In addition, we have our own in-house framing workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary year. Furthermore, we utilize restorers from the professional association: ‘Restauratoren Nederland’. If you would like to make use of these services, we would of course be happy to hear from you.
