Nico Eekman, Boerderij met bomen, an oil painting on marouflage in an early luminist style, signed and sold with frame, Origineel edition, dated 1910–1920.
Description from the seller
This early luminist oil painting on marouflage is by Nico Eekman. It shows a house tucked away behind tall trees in the front garden. It may be a house in Nuenen, where the artist had his studio at the time, though the work also exudes a French atmosphere.
Nikolaas Mathijs Eekman (Brussels, August 9, 1889 – Paris, November 13, 1973) was a Dutch figurative painter and illustrator. He gained recognition in France, Belgium and the Netherlands under various names, including Nicolas Eekman, Nico Eekman, and the pseudonym Ekma. Eekman was friends with several artists of his time, among them Piet Mondriaan.
In his early oeuvre, Brabantian rural life plays an important role. Drawing on memories and impressions from his youth, he created paintings in which reality and imagination come together. In this work too, it is not so much an exact depiction of a place that is central, but rather a personal and atmospheric evocation of the landscape and the life that inspired him.
