Work description:
With “Der Wannsee” Peter Robert Keil shows a rare and especially poetic side of his oeuvre. Instead of an expressive portrait, he here dedicates himself to a landscape and lakeside scene that nonetheless bears his unmistakable spontaneous handwriting and powerful color perception.
Several sailboats glide over the deep-blue surface of Berlin’s Wannsee. The white sails rise like elegant vertical forms out of the picture and form a tense contrast to the lively colorfulness of water, shore, and sky.
The opposite shore appears in vivid red, green, yellow, and white tones and becomes a rhythmic band of color between water and sky. The loose, gestural brushwork conveys movement, light, and atmosphere without getting lost in details.
The sailboats function not only as landscape elements but also as symbols of freedom, summer, and movement. The work exudes lightness and optimism and recalls the special atmosphere of Berlin’s Wannsee, one of the city’s best-known recreation areas.
Despite the simplification, the scene remains immediately recognizable and possesses a strong decorative effect.
The composition radiates joie de vivre, immediacy, and artistic spontaneity—a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother fought her way with her son to West Berlin in the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting—especially in expressionist artists as well as in the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him initial craft skills and painting techniques.
