Description of the work:
With “Woman at the Window,” Peter Robert Keil combines the classical representation of the figure with an narrative scene full of color, fantasy, and joie de vivre. The work belongs to the characteristic female portraits of his early 1980s period and vividly demonstrates his ability to create a strong emotional and decorative impact from just a few lines.
At the center is a self-assured-looking female figure with long blonde hair and a colorful hat. The bright pink, yellow, blue, and green tones give the painting extraordinary radiance, while the bold black outlines rhythmically structure the composition.
Especially striking is the small window in the background, where sailboats appear on the water. This picture-within-a-picture motif creates an interpretive level and lends the work a nearly dreamlike atmosphere. The woman seems to stand between interior and exterior – between observation, memory, and longing.
The monumental figure dominates the composition and is simultaneously convincingly framed by the luminous colors and the decorative original frame. The work exudes optimism, summer mood, and a playful elegance.
The composition radiates joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy – a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother fought her way with her son to West Berlin in the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – in particular in expressionist artists as well as in the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from about 1954 and taught him his first craft skills and painting techniques.
