This oil on canvas painting is a piece in an impressionist style that captures a moment of domestic repose with great vitality. The composition centers on a bright orange tabby cat, with intense green eyes, lying comfortably on a cluster of textile surfaces in a deep and vibrant emerald green. In front of the feline, an open book is spread out, and to its right, a cup of coffee or tea rests on a small wooden shelf, with a napkin underneath. The background is a warm orange-toned wooden panel, where a lattice-shadow pattern, projected by light entering through a window out of the frame, adds depth and a sunny warmth. The painter uses loose, textured, visible brushstrokes (impasto) throughout the work, allowing the physical application of paint to be an integral part of the visual experience. The contrast between the complementary tones orange and green creates a strong visual tension that is softened by the relaxed composition of the cat. Through this approach, the artist successfully conveys a sense of contemplative calm, comfort, and the joy of simple life pleasures, such as reading and the companionship of a pet in a sunlit space. The impressionist style does not focus on anatomical precision or detail, but on capturing the “impression” of light, color, and atmosphere of the scene at a specific moment, creating an image that is both a representation and a tactile expression of the scene.
