Biography of TA Duy Tung (1961).
Born in 1961 in Hai Phong, Vietnam.
Ta Duy Tung is a contemporary Vietnamese painter born in 1961 in Hai Phong. A respected figure on his hometown’s art scene, he has developed a unique visual language that oscillates between psychological realism and lyrical abstraction.
Style and Artistic Vision
His work is distinguished by a deep exploration of the human figure, often staged in fragmented or partially concealed compositions. Through the use of strong chromatic contrasts — such as black-and-white transitions with spots of vivid color, or the juxtaposition of dark backgrounds with warm flesh tones — he captures the subjects’ inner life.
• The Gaze and Silence: His portraits, whether frontal or profile, convey a melancholic serenity. Attention to details of the gaze or the curve of a face shows technical mastery.
• Technique: The artist works with material, using broad, textured brushstrokes to create movement or fading effects, often symbolizing the passage of time or the duality of identity.
Themes
Themes of femininity, urban memory, and traditional culture lie at the heart of his work. Whether through silhouettes of phantom cities rising behind a face or the elegance of a woman adorned with ethnic motifs, Ta Duy Tung weaves a link between Vietnam’s cultural heritage and introspective modernity.
Today, his paintings are appreciated for their ability to provoke immediate emotion, inviting the viewer on a journey beyond the image, into the depths of the human soul.
