Léon GAUD (1844–1908)
Animated Farm Scene
Oil on cardboard
Monogrammed
Dimensions: 30 x 22 cm (work)
Dimensions: 45 x 38 cm (with frame)
Léon Gaud, born in Versoix in 1844 and died in Les Eaux-Vives (Geneva) in 1908, is a Swiss painter active from the second half of the 19th century to the early 20th century. A pupil of Barthélemy Menn in Geneva, a central figure of the Genevan school, he trained in a high-level artistic environment and participated, under his master’s direction, in the decoration of the Knights’ Hall of Gruyères Castle, where he came into contact with artists such as Camille Corot.
From 1862 he regularly exhibited in Geneva’s artistic manifestations, and in 1902 he succeeded Menn as director of the Geneva École des Beaux-Arts. His career was crowned in 1900 by a silver medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle.
His production focuses mainly on intimate landscapes and rustic scenes, often set in the surroundings of Lake Geneva. His works reflect a poetic sensibility and a humanist view of rural life, with a painting language close to the Barbizon tradition and French Naturalism.
The present painting depicts a lively peasant life scene with figures and domestic animals at the foot of a building. The composition is built with a free and vibrant brushstroke, where forms emerge through warm and harmonious color contrasts. The intimate atmosphere and the golden light give the work a particularly evocative character.
Work mounted in a decorative frame in the style.
Good overall condition, with slight signs of age consistent with the support.
