Biography of Hoang Anh.
Born in 1984 in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam, lives and works in Hanoi
Originating from Thanh Hoa province, located 150 km south of Hanoi, Hoang Anh belongs to that pivotal generation of Vietnamese artists (the 8x generation) who combine cultural heritage with contemporary abstraction. A graduate of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, he has established himself on Hanoi’s art scene with a bold approach to material and color.
Graduated from the Artistic Talents program (class of 13) at the Thanh Hoa College of Culture and Arts
Graduated from the Painting Department (class of 48) of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts
Style and Artistic Approach
Hoang Anh’s work is distinguished by an intense exploration of texture and movement. While he explores varied themes such as landscapes, nature, and the female figure, it is in abstraction that his expressive power is fully revealed:
• The energy of gesture: A devotee of oil painting and acrylic, he frequently uses a palette knife to apply color in strong horizontal strokes. This gesture creates a nearly musical rhythm across the canvas.
• Chromatic contrasts: His work plays with the opposition between often neutral backgrounds (urban greys, textured whites) and bursts of primary colors — fiery reds, sunny yellows, and deep blues — seemingly emanating from the surface.
• Lyric abstraction: His compositions do not seek to reproduce reality but to capture its emotional essence. His canvases often evoke ephemeral phenomena: the reflection of light on water, the vibration of heat, or the bustle of a metropolis in full transition.
Exhibitions and Recognition
An active and recognized artist, Hoang Anh regularly exhibits in Hanoi’s prestigious galleries and within national artistic collectives. His works are part of numerous private collections in Vietnam and abroad, captivating with their ability to translate Eastern sensibilities into a universal, modern language.
"Painting is, for me, a breath, a way to fix the invisible energy that surrounds us." — Hoang Anh
