The photographer spent weeks going through her family's trash, letting materials rot in her studio, which produced a pungent odor at the location.

Mariska was born in Suriname, South America. She is of Surinamese, Indonesian, African and a little Dutch descent, and grew up in the Netherlands. Raised in the beautiful Vermeer city of Delft, living in Rembrandt country, Netherlands, she came into contact with Venice through a commission for a perfume brand and was deeply touched by the baroque art, architecture and history of Venice. All these influences in her life inspired her. Mariska started to incorporate these inspirations into her own work, drawing on her life and existence.
