Note: with the help of potter Hans Spinner, Pierre Alechinsky created book-shaped sculptures, the larger ones in stoneware and the smaller ones in porcelain. Whether open or closed, they are decorated with a drawing, a simple line, a word or a pun.
"To the forms presented to him by the potter - masses of chamotte clay or porcelain - in the shape of books, grimoires or sheaves of papers, Alechinsky gives meaning and offers an interpretation, capturing with a single stroke - that of a fine brush - a suggestion born of form, returning to that practice of automatic writing that lies at the very origin of his work. Black on white, revealing, Alechinsky’s brush traverses these essential pages, linking text and drawing, and tracing them back to that common origin of Chinese writing which, for the painter, renders drawing a narrative, the image an aspect of the ideogram. This attention to writing, initially limited - at a time when it was not very common - to the titling of paintings, before becoming an autonomous and regular production of texts, finds here its paradoxical illustration. As with composing a haiku, the space offered to the painter by Hans Spinner imposes a contraction of thought and gesture, reducing the miniature to a few brushstrokes and a touch of wit." (in Alechinsky, toiles, grès et porcelaines, Galerie Lelong, 1994).
