This powerful work by the German artist A.R. Penck (1939–2017) is an outstanding example of his characteristic visual language. The silkscreen “Für Bitterfeld” was created in 1990 and reflects Penck’s engagement with political and social issues.

A.R. Penck, born Ralf Winkler in Dresden, was a self-taught artist who distinguished himself with his unmistakable visual language. His works, often characterized by stick-figures, symbols and signs, recall cave painting, Asian calligraphy and graffiti. With his “Standart” painting he pursued universal comprehensibility of his art that should communicate across cultural and linguistic borders. Penck was repeatedly represented at Documenta and his works are found in major museums worldwide, including MoMA in New York and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.
