A.R. Penck (1939-2017)
The German painter, sculptor, musician and writer A.R. Penck, whose real name is Ralf Winkler, was born in 1939 in Dresden and initially worked in East Berlin in East Germany. Penck's images are inspired by prehistoric art and are characterized by the use of pictorial language elements such as stick figures, signs and symbols.
Penck is also regarded as the father of the "Neue Wilde" (New Wild Art), a movement of the early 1980s with an ironic and provocative aesthetic.
The multiple Documenta participant received numerous art prizes and his works are represented in many significant collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
