This painting shows a young woman with a small child at her feet. They stand on a boat with the quay in the background. The surroundings are painted rather roughly, but the faces carry a lot of detail and expression.
Hobbe Smith was a Dutch painter, born on December 2, 1862 in Witmarsum and died on April 1, 1942 in Amsterdam. He is known for his realistic and impressionistic paintings, which often depict daily life and maritime scenes. Smith studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he among other things studied under August Allebé. During his career he exhibited his work at home and abroad and received various distinctions. His paintings are characterized by a detailed portrayal of the subject and a subtle use of light and color. In addition to paintings, Smith also produced etchings and watercolors.
Smith's work is included in various museum and private collections and remains valued by art collectors and enthusiasts of realist and impressionist art.
