She opened the door expecting to find her husband, and found instead the proof of what she may have already suspected for some time. Her hand still rests on the door, as if her body arrived before the rest of her did. Her face has not yet decided what to do with what it sees, the shock arriving as stillness rather than expression, the kind of blankness that comes just before a person remembers how to feel something.

Behind her, warm light spills from the room she has just left, indifferent to what is unfolding in the doorway. In front of her, the man who once swore he was hers alone remains entirely unaware, lost somewhere he can no longer be called back from in time. The discovery has already happened. He simply has not woken up to it yet.
