“Terracotta Coast” is an aerial photograph produced by Italian photographer Sara Zanini, known for her drone work and for her visual exploration of urban geometries observed from above, where cities and natural landscapes transform into graphic and almost abstract compositions.
The image captures from above the famous coastal village of Nazaré, one of the most iconic places on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. The inhabited center runs along the coastline with a dense weave of terracotta-roofed buildings that form a compact and vibrant urban fabric. The houses seem arranged like tiles in an architectural mosaic, creating a dynamic and rhythmic visual pattern.
Viewed from this vertical perspective, the city appears as a large graphic composition divided into color bands: the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean, the bright white of the foam of the waves, the golden sand of the beach, and the warm red of the roofs. These natural and urban elements dialogue with each other, creating a surprising visual balance where the geometry of the architecture meets the organic force of the sea.
The title “Terracotta Coast” arises precisely from this chromatic and material contrast. The red roofs of the city seem to form a continuous strip that follows the shoreline, as if the urban landscape were a natural extension of the coast itself.
The aerial perspective allows the viewer to grasp a visual order that is normally elusive from the ground. Streets, buildings and waves become lines, textures, and fields of color that transform the real landscape into an almost painterly composition. The work thus sits between documentary photography and visual abstraction, offering a new and surprising reading of one of Europe’s most iconic coastal landscapes.
