A figurative composition of strong expressive character. In the center of the scene, a stylised horseman rides a rearing white horse, in a play of angular forms and opposing planes that recalls the lesson of Italian Cubism and the great tradition of the equestrian theme in twentieth-century art (from Marino Marini onwards). The palette is built on an earthy range of browns, ochre gold, chalk white and deep black, with the full moon serving as a luminous backdrop on the right half of the composition. The painting matter is rich, worked with tactile depth through material interventions and successive glazes that yield a tangible depth to the surface. The horseman subject is one of the most recognizable and sought-after themes in Landi’s output.
𝗟’𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮
Bruno Landi is a contemporary Italian painter, active since the 1970s. His stylistic signature is characterized by a synthetic figuration of post-CCubist matrix, with references to Italian painting of the second half of the twentieth century, and in particular to Marino Marini’s Horsemen cycle. Recurring themes of his work are the stylised human figure, the equestrian world, musical compositions and dance scenes, always treated with an earthy palette and a strong compositional structure. He exhibits regularly in Italian and European galleries.
