Description from the seller
This is a drawing by Leo Gestel depicting a park landscape, with in the background a boat and various figures in the scene. Leendert (Leo) Gestel (Woerden, November 22, 1881 – Hilversum, November 26, 1941) was a Dutch painter, draftsman and bookbinding designer, and is regarded as one of the most important innovators of modern art in the Netherlands.
Gestel initially developed a luminist style, which he applied in his early landscapes around Woerden. In the years that followed, he experimented with various modern movements, including Cubism, Expressionism and Fauvism. His work is characterized by a strong sensitivity to color, light and composition. Through this continuous artistic development Gestel took a prominent place within the Dutch avant-garde of the first half of the twentieth century. His oeuvre is nowadays represented in numerous Dutch and international museum collections.
