Description from the seller
This early luminist painting in oil on marouflage is by Nico Eekman. It shows a house hidden behind tall trees in the front garden. Possibly it is a house in Nuenen, where the artist had his studio at the time, though the work also exudes a French atmosphere.
Nikolaas Mathijs Eekman (Brussels, 9 August 1889 – Paris, 13 November 1973) was a Dutch figurative painter and illustrator. He gained recognition in France, Belgium and the Netherlands under various names, including Nicolas Eekman, Nico Eekman, and the pseudonym Ekma. Eekman was friends with several artists of his time, among them Piet Mondrian.
In his early oeuvre the Brabantian peasant life plays an important role. Drawing on memories and impressions from his youth, he created paintings in which reality and imagination come together. Also in this work, it is not so much an exact depiction of a place that is central, but rather a personal and atmospheric evocation of the landscape and the life that inspired him.
