Pietà, an oil painting on canvas by Matthieu Wiegman (1886–1971) from the Netherlands, dated 1900–1910, in the Expressionism style, sold with a frame; dimensions 61 x 50 cm (canvas) and 79 x 67 cm (with frame).
Description from the seller
This is an oil painting on canvas by Matthieu Wiegman. It concerns a Pieta, a well-known theme in Christian art. It shows the Virgin Mary holding the dead body of Jesus Christ and/or resting him on her lap after his crucifixion. But then in Wiegman's own, colorful manner.
Later Matthieu Wiegman, together with Leo Gestel and Arnout Colnot, grew to become one of the leading representatives of the Bergense School. His brother, Piet Wiegman, was also part of this circle of artists. In the works of both brothers the influence of Paul Cézanne is clearly recognizable.
Dimensions: 61 x 50 cm
Dimensions with frame: 79 x 67 cm
Lower right signed
Provenance: Private collection, The Netherlands
