The Minitel (for “Medium interactive by digitization of telephone information”) is a type of computer terminal designed to connect to the French Videotex service named Telétel, commercially operated in France from July 1980 to June 30, 2012. It was the first service in the world to provide access to a variety of services that prefigured those of the future Internet, and the most developed in 1990. It uses for this the French X.25 Transpac network, which itself prefigures the future transmission infrastructure of the Internet. It enjoyed considerable success and remained in use for a long time, even competing with Internet.
