Description from the seller
Maurice BONNEL (1923-2019) Conversation in front of “Aux Deux Magots”, ca. 1950. Later silver gelatin print, 30 x 40 cm (including margins).
Defining himself as a “street photographer,” Maurice Bonnel was a French photographer whose work is part of the great tradition of postwar humanist photography. Long little-known, his work was rediscovered after his death thanks to a published monograph and several exhibitions.
He devoted the bulk of his work to the Paris of the common people between 1950 and 1965, with a distinctive personality, more discreet and often more mischievous.
In 2022 the book Le Paris de Maurice Bonnel 1950-1965, written by Patrick Marsaud, was published. This book gathers nearly a hundred unpublished photographs and constitutes the first monograph devoted to the photographer.
On that occasion, Atelier/Galerie Taylor in Paris hosted an exhibition devoted to him, presenting original silver gelatin prints.
Maurice Bonnel now occupies an increasingly recognized place among French humanist photographers, offering a precious and sensitive testimony of postwar Paris’s everyday life. His work appeals to both collectors and enthusiasts of the history of photography.
