The work is usually listed under the titles “Football”, “Les footballeurs le Ballon d'or” or “Equipe des Pays Bas”. It was created in 2000. Corneille designed this dynamic motif for the football European Championship 2000 (Euro 2000), which was held jointly in the Netherlands and Belgium. The red-white-blue flags in the upper right quadrant represent the national flag of the Netherlands. The football depicted in the foreground is often embellished with fine 24-karat gold leaf on many prints of this edition. Typical of Corneille’s association with the famous CoBrA art movement, the picture is characterized by its vibrant color palette, expressive outlines, and the almost childlike-naive, powerful dynamism.
Guillaume Corneille (actually Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo; born July 3, 1922 in Liège; died September 5, 2010 in Auvers-sur-Oise) was a prominent Dutch painter, graphic artist and sculptor, who became internationally known especially as a co-founder of the revolutionary artist group CoBrA.
